This fall I began research and filming for a personal project, a mini documentary about the importance of vibrant community and street life in Chinese culture. Specifically, I was looking at Chinese immigrant enclaves in the five boroughs of New York City. I wanted to share the story behind the bustle, putting the audience into the middle of the crowds and noise. On my own and with my friend, Allan Lin, I canvassed everywhere from the familiar streets of Manhattan Chinatown to the more unvarnished Chinese diaspora deep in Queens and Brooklyn. We tried our best to get our heads around and explain with examples the “hard to define, but I know it when I see it” concept of renao (热闹). Renao is… well, how about watching the trailer? While the documentary is still quite a long way from looking anything like done, I wanted to give you a little taste of what’s to come. Would love to hear what you think.
