Oreimo 俺の妹がこんなに可愛いわけがない

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

The show website released an official map of the Tokyo neighborhoods used as models for the show setting. Though nowhere near as detailed as most fan location spotting maps (see below), it’s interesting to see the marketing team acknowledge a relatively niche interest in this direct way. There was something like this put out for Tamako Market, but it was more abstract and didn’t explicitly acknowledge the real life location.

@habusan updated a previous pilgrimage with more photos, and published a new one covering Shinjuku and Sasazuka.

Now that’s a map:

Episode 4

The Devil is a Part-Timer! はたらく魔王さま!

The entire episode revolves around the neighborhood surrounding Sasazuka Station (笹塚駅), the scene of the battle between Lucifer and Satan.

The Kōshū Kaidō (甲州街道) has seen better days. This was one of the five routes connecting Tokyo with other parts of Japan during the Edo period.

Aiura あいうら

Kanaka and Saki walk to school through what I’m going to guess is the part of Kamakura up on the mountain. An earlier episode featured a downtown intersection and street cafe.

The Flowers of Evil 惡の華

Nakamura drags Kasuga through the downtown district of Kiryū in the wee hours of the night.

The Flowers of Evil 惡の華

The area is a type of shōtengai where the street is two lanes, full width and not pedestrianized, but wide covered sidewalks on both sides are intended to induce foot traffic and allow for open storefronts to “chew” on the roadside. Though this place looks like it’s probably pretty dead, even once the sun comes up.
