A Certain Scientific Railgun S とある科学の超電磁砲(レールガン)

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Mikoto’s clone goes to Tachikawa-Minami Station (立川南駅) to retrieve a package from the lockers at the monorail station.

She uses her near field communication transit card to pay the locker fee. The card in this scene resembles Suica, the network operated by East Japan Railway Company. In real life this is a Pasmo terminal, but because the networks are interoperable either card would work.

Episode 6

Yuyushiki ゆゆ式

Yui, Yuzuko and other students are depicted walking to school, undeterred by the cold weather. I think samui desu ne? (cold, isn’t it?) was the first Japanese I ever spoke to another person (I arrived in Tokyo in the middle of winter). A bit like chi fan le ma? in Mandarin (have you eaten?), it loses its literal meaning and becomes a casual greeting. When you don’t use a car for point-to-point travel between climate controlled environments, you have many more opportunities to carry on about just how samui or atsui it is.

Yuyushiki ゆゆ式

Several times during the episode, the trio is shown walking through the central business district on the walk home from school.
