Episode 8

The Devil is a Part-Timer! はたらく魔王さま!

Maou and Chiho walk down a narrow, one lane street in Sasazuka. There is effectively no sidewalk or shoulder, so everyone must share the road.

Suzuno meets Emi at Sasazuka Station (笹塚駅).

The smarmy manager of MgRonald’s competitor makes a comment about how Hatagaya is a great place to open a franchise because of its location between a business and residential district. He’s an unlikable character, but the observation is spot on!

Suzuno is very excited to show that she has managed to buy a transit IC card (this one is Suica inspired) from the vending terminal at Shinjuku Station.

Maou puts his tactical response into motion, beginning with staff standing in the street hawking promotional flyers. This isn’t effective, but it’s in the right direction. The street in question is narrow, with shop fronts sitting right up against the edge of the lane, and is on the main pathway south from Sasazuka Station toward the residential district. In the previous episode, Maou even refers to the area as a shōtengai, a shopping arcade that is typically pedestrian only by rule or de facto, on account of heavy foot traffic. There are many opportunities to make use of the intimate scale of this kind of public space.

The ace up Maou’s sleeve is to have a friend deliver bamboo branches which they will decorate with paper streamers and ornaments, a customary practice during Tanabata.

They invite passersby to participate, offering coupons in exchange for helping to decorate. Specifically, customers are invited to write wishes on pieces of paper and tie them to the bamboo branches. The strips are one of the seven types of decorations used during Tanabata, each with its own meaning. Strips are historically used to ask for things like good handwriting and studies.

Streets are closed off to traffic between JR Makuhari Station and Makuhari Seaside Park (幕張海浜公園) to accomodate the large number of people attending hanabi. This is common practice anywhere that is a popular public space for viewing events, especially fireworks, such as at Yokohama Minato Mirai 21 waterfront commercial district.

While Kuroko dismisses superstition and proclaims the virtue of science based approaches that have made Academy City world class, the image we see is of compact, vertical development, greenery and wind turbines. Not sure if this was intentional, but it’s a pretty powerful statement about the role of smart urban development and clean energy infrastructure as the desired path for a sustainable future.

Kuroko counsels a child while they sit at outdoor cafe seating in a tree shaded plaza.

A Certain Scientific Railgun S とある科学の超電磁砲(レールガン)

The Judgement officers encourages the child to give up her search for lucky money cards and instead search for four-leaved clovers on the riverside embankment (土手 dote). These images are employed frequently in manga and anime, usually reflecting a return to innocence or reflection on simpler times. Honey and Clover has one of the more well-known instances, as both the theme of transition from childhood to adulthood and the clover itself are deeply embedded in the story.

A Certain Scientific Railgun S とある科学の超電磁砲(レールガン)

In this episode there are teriffic angles with the camera literally in the ground, giving the viewer a very strong sense of being immersed in the physical environment.

Their day ends at the train station. There is a Koga Station (古河駅)−different kanji/short vowel on first character—in Ibaraki Prefecture that is configured similarly, though aesthetically quite different. In real life this is Asagaya Station (阿佐ヶ谷駅), which is consistent with the shōtengai location.
