Fan Pilgrimage Update

@ye_bi_su did an incredible job of cataloging the “False Eizan Railway” race through Kyoto, especially the segment through the Termachi Shōtengai, in his pilgrimage for Episode 12.

Episode 12

The Eccentric Family 有頂天家族

As per usual, plenty of lush scenery to digest in this week’s episode. Here are a few new angles of the Ebisugawa hydropower plant (夷川発電所).

He reprises his famed transformation of the Eizan Electric Railway (叡山電鉄株式会社). The three younger Shimogamo brothers race off in the direction of Ponto-chō (先斗町) to save Yaichirō, with the captured Ebisugawas in tow, passing many places and surprised onlookers en route.

When the False Eizan Railway enters the shōtengai, one of the vendors it passes is Kyūkyo-dō (鳩居堂), a well-known paper specialist that dates to 1663.

Shreds of decorative paper in this and the next frame are a nod to Kyūkyo-dō. That this small detail from the light novel made it into the animation speaks to the careful attention to detail in P.A. Works’ productions.

The silliness factor aside, Gatchaman Crowds has had a pretty smart take on how mobile devices, social networking and mapping tools have affected how we interact with the built environment and with each other. Though many anime, especially those of the science fiction and cyberpunk variety, have featured various forms of this hyper-connectivity, the difference in Crowds is that the technologies depicted actually exist in the hands of many right now.

Later, Madarame is perusing a magazine display outside a small shop in his neighborhood when approached by Hato.

As Hato approaches, we see a shot down the narrow, one lane neighborhood shopping street. This is the essence of a shōtengai (商店街). Covered arcades and pedestrian streets are more advanced forms, but at its core the shōtengai is just a street or small district where business owners have chosen to aggregate and serve a local community.
