Coppelion コッペリオン

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

@seki_saima updated his season catalog with a few missing cuts from later episodes, including a pilgrimage to Ōboke Station in Miyoshi, Tokushima Prefecture for Episode 10, though there were no new cuts to include from Episode 12. This is the most comprehensive pilgrimage for Kyōkai no Kanata.

@kbt_tigers1985 made a pilgrimage to Ōboke Station in Miyoshi, Tokushima Prefecture for Episode 10.

Episode 12

Beyond the Boundary 境界の彼方

Well, after a fun season of romps around Nara Prefecture, featuring locations that have not appeared in any anime in recent memory, our final episode gives us a somewhat rushed and not entirely fleshed out tie-up of plot elements, leaving little room for much else. There are a few cuts in locations we’ve seen many times before, but otherwise not much to talk about.

Though it’s nice when a series can go out with a strong finish, no one bats 1000, I suppose (^_^). Hopefully, Kyoto Animation can make up for the momentary lapse with a good second season of Chūnibyo Demo Koi ga Shitai! Ren and the film sequel to Tamako Market in 2014!

Fan Pilgrimage Update

@Newyork0201 made a pilgrimage to Shakujii-kōen Station in Nerima; Mitaka Station in Mitaka; the Sunroad Shōtengai, Kichijōji Station and Tokyu Department Store in Kichijōji, Musashino (preceeding all Tokyo Metropolis); and Hakodate port in Hakodate, Hokkaido, covering Episode 22 and Episode 23.

@rimatai (post) and @shira_ry (post) both made pilgrimages to Kanda and Kichijoji for Episode 22 and Episode 23.

(Weekly Review issues 67 and 68 have been updated to reflect the new information.)

@rimatai also made a pilgrimage to Hijiri Bridge in Ochanomizu, Tokyo for an earlier episode.

Monogatari Series Second Season 〈物語〉シリーズ セカンドシーズン

Many many things to take a look at this week. Based on the previous few episodes, I’ll probably have to return to this post with updates over the next week or two as the seichijunrei hive reports back findings.

Again, Kaiki’s monologues get the backing of the torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha (伏見稲荷大社) in Kyoto.

A new twist is that we also see him pictured in a large hall of a Buddhist temple. My hunch is that this is Tōdai-ji (東大寺) in Nara, which would make this the Daibutsu (大仏), the largest bronze statue of the Buddha Vairocana in the world.

The blending of multiple locations in Monogatari is often subtle enough to go unnoticed if you aren’t watching for it. But in this case, they’re just playing with the audience, having the Fushimi Inari torii lead up to the Daibutsu. Even if you didn’t recognize the specific places, Shinto shrines have torii, Buddhist temples do not.

Aoyama Flower Market is a chain with about 70 shops in Tokyo and its periphery. However, the Minami-Aoyama branch is the original shop, and one of only two that also feature a tea house, so perhaps that is the one depicted here.

Episode 12

Golden Time ゴールデンタイム

Kōko takes a late train, going out to search for Banri. Based on the destinations on the board, I think this is the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line (南北線), with through service to Musashi-kosugi via interoperation with the Tōkyū Meguro Line (東急目黒線). The Namboku could be picked up at Ichigaya Station, which we’ve seen Banri and Kōko use in earlier episodes.
