Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

@ye_bi_su (post), @dib_cnn (post) and @etesuke (post) made pilgrimages to Fushimi Inari Taisha and Fushimi-Inari Station in Fushimi Ward, and Keage Station in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto for Episode 2.

@lidges (post 1 and 2), @paffue (post) and @aqcuaria (post 1 and 2) made pilgrimages to Fushimi Inari Taisha and vicinity in Kyoto for Episode 1.

@tsuruga_mega (post) and @dib_cnn (post) both examined the cardboard cutouts of characters from the show placed in Keihan Main Line stations for which they’re named. Here is the direct link (PDF) to the Keihan Electric Railway press release regarding the collaboration.

This last item is really neat. In addition to his pilgrimages, @dib_cnn wrote a separate post about the high visibility guard sleeve around a utility pole support wire in the narrow neighborhood streets around Fushimi Inari Taisha. Though it doesn’t blend in with the very old and historic feel of the street, the guard is needed to prevent collisions as cars attempt to maneuver through streets that were laid long before their existence. The inclusion of the guard in the background art is an indicator of the realism and level of detail used in the show, and this blogger’s focused attention to this piece of the landscape is exactly the kind of convergence between pop culture tourism and engagement on urban issues that I’ve sought to tease out through this column. In the same week, he wrote several similar posts (1, 2, 3) for Tamako Market.

Episode 2

Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha いなり、こんこん、恋いろは。

A flashback conveys one of Inari’s earlier encounters with Tanbabashi, as students walk through the neighborhood on the morning commute to school.
