@aqcuaria made a pilgrimage to Jan Jan Yokochō in Naniwa Ward, Osaka for Episode 7.

Episode 7

Saki: The Nationals 咲-Saki-全国編

The backstory for Himematsu takes us to this ramp leading down from the surface streets to the entrance of the pedestrian arcade Jan Jan Yokochō (ジャンジャン横丁). “Jan Jan” is onomatopoeia for the sound of drums and shamisen once used to attract patrons to shops in the alley, which was converted from an open air street to a covered shōtengai in 1997. Like Shinsekai (新世界), the larger area of which the alley is a part, Jan Jan Yokochō is rooted in the early 20th century and followed a similar arc as Osaka’s bright and modern showpiece, enjoying a brief period of notoriety before lack of investment and general neglect following World War II put it on a continuous downward trajectory. The contemporary image of Shinsekai is of a decaying neighborhood hosting Osaka’s homeless population, who moved in after organized crime left in the 1990s, and inundated with prostitution. However, Jan Jan remains one of the bright spots of local culture throughout the area that continue to fight on, particularly shogi and mahjong parlors, and no-frills restaurants serving Osaka specialty kushikatsu (串カツ), battered and deep fried skewers served with communal pots of dipping sauce (no double dipping allowed!). Normally I wouldn’t serve up so many background details about a relatively minor moment in a show, but sometimes it’s amazing how far you can dig with just a small nugget of information.

Pedestrian and bicycle path along the Seta River (瀬田川)—I think. With the appearance of a nondescript new location late in the season, there’s always the suspicion that it’s from somewhere near Kyoto Animation offices and studios in Uji.

Butterfly Law Offices takes a training trip to Boston. We didn’t see much of the city in this first episode of the arc, save the highway coming into town from the airport, but there was a brief scene in a station on the subway Red Line operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. For your reference and amusement, you can check the live status of the subway lines at How f**ked is the T?

Hamatora ハマトラ

Hamatora was nominally in Okinawa this week, but the handful of recognizable background art flew by so quickly it might as well have been anywhere. The Okinawa stereotype characters were overblown well beyond the point of being funny. Nothing to write home about!
