For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Episode 12

Seitokai Yakuindomo* 生徒会役員共*

The first part of the episode has everyone lining up in the cold on New Year’s Day in the commercial business district surrounding Sagami-Ōno Station (相模大野駅) in Sagamihara (相模原), Kanagawa Prefecture.

Seitokai Yakuindomo* 生徒会役員共*

Everyone is waiting for the retail stores to open for browsing fukubukuro (福袋)—”lucky bag” or “mystery bag”—a new year custom in which unknown items are bundled and sold at deep discounts as a promotional event.

In a different story segment, the students linger around the central business district as they walk home for the day. The show art is interesting for the varying level of detail in the backgrounds. The student council office and other school scenes are fairly simple and not too dynamic. Then there are the outdoor shots that crop closely to the characters, with the background details left soft and intentionally blurred to create a camera bokeh effect. But every so often we see these incredibly detailed, deep depth-of-field shots like those around the train station, with very careful attention paid to details like signage text, surface textures and shading.

The penultimate installment is essentially a slide show of popular and recognizable spots around Tokyo. Fun, if a bit hackneyed. We start out in Ameya-Yokochō (アメヤ横丁).

Special Items

There has been quite a bit of buzz over the restoration of a modest clock tower in a small, triangular shaped plaza outside the northwest entrance to Nishinomiya-Kitaguchi Station. The park is one of the key locations in the setting of the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise, so its 2009 redevelopment, including demolition of the clock tower, seemingly marked the end of an era for pilgrimage opportunities. However, fans stumbled upon the remains of the clock in a local scrap yard and lobbied the municipal authorities for its refurbishment and return to the park, which the city accepted and completed as of 2014 March 27, with an unveiling ceremony scheduled for April 12. Nishinomiya and Haruhi pilgrimage is the home turf of @keyboar, who was first on the scene with an extensive writeup and a video of the redevelopment history:

@tesra1141 posted a short clip of the installation work:

Mainichi Shimbun, Netorabo and Yahoo! News all ran fairly detailed items about the tower, drawing almost exclusively on information collected by the pilgrimage community.

Mainichi Shimbun also ran an article about AnimeJapan, an event held at Tokyo Big Site that featured local government representatives promoting anime pilgrimage tourism in their respective cities.

@kai881 returns to Mikuni in Sakai, Fukui Prefecture for the first PV of Glass Lip.

@Beetle787 made a pilgrimage to multiple Tokyo locations for Nisekoi.

@BloodRambo made a pilgrimage to the Setagaya Ward, Tokyo branch of Jashumon cafe for Kyōkai no Kanata.

@sky_dj_ made a pilgrimage to Tsunoshima Bridge in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture for Monogatari Series Second Season.

@rimatai made pilgrimages to Akihabara Station, Ochanomizu and Asakusa for Tokyo Ravens.
