Episode 4

One Week Friends 一週間フレンズ。

This week features extensive depiction of students commuting to and from school. Unlike in the United States, where adverse weather frequently mobilizes an auxiliary fleet of private cars chauffeuring suburban students to school, here it just means time for the umbrellas to come out.

One Week Friends 一週間フレンズ。

Most of this episode’s neighborhood scenes are all modeled on the vicinity of Minamidaira Station (南平駅) in Hino, Tokyo Metropolis.

It is becoming clearer that, while One Week Friends is a mostly faithful recreation of these suburban cities west of the core of Tokyo, is is to some extent a composite. This neighborhood and river view from the school roof is Hino, but the Fuchū-Yotsuya Bridge (府中四谷橋) is also spliced in, a few kilometers west of its actual location.

Embankments (土手 dote) along the Tama River (多摩川). In manga and anime, dote are often used as a motif to accompany childhood memories and experiences—in this particular scene, angst.

The dark and gloomy dote from before has become a bright golden Elysium as Hase recovers Fujimiya’s diary and the two resolve their disagreement. It drips with the kind of metaphysical movement from darkness to light, tension to resolution found in European art and music from the Romantic period. Delacroix and Beethoven would approve.

One curious twist here at the end is that, despite the explicit cooperation of the Keiō Group and extensive use of its logo in the show, the name of this station has been changed from Minamidaira Station (南平駅) to Midorikawa Station (緑川駅).

Though it appears like a lot of running around, all of the street scenes in this episode are set in a close radius around the Akihabara (秋葉原) retail district. The grocery store is under the rail viaduct that carries the Yamanote Line (山手線) and Keihin-Tōhoku Line (京浜東北線).

Further evidence to support my hypothesis that at least 50 percent of all anime beach scenes use Kamakura as a visual model. Elfen Lied, written and illustrated by the same mangaka Lynn Okamoto, uses this exact same shot overlooking the town from Jōju-in (成就院).

Tamako Love Story

Fan Pilgrimage Update

The Asahi Shimbun Digital ran an article about the renewed interest in Demachi Masugata Shōtengai following the opening of the film, with an extensive gallery of images taken by a staff reporter.

@ts_kobaya made a video pilgrimage to Kyoto for the premiere of Tamako Love Story:

@lidges published a summary of all the premiere related events in Kyoto, with photography from Demachi Masugata Shōtengai and the special exhibition at Hirakata Park.

@los_endos_ reprised his duty as identifier of the record albums that appear in the cafe Hoshi to Piero.

@gromit1446 has been working on a long term research project which I only recently discovered, going deep into the background behind the porcelain cups (index with links to multiple sub posts) used in the cafe.

@rimatai made a pilgrimage to the Lake Biwa canal and Kamo River delta.

Suzaki Aya, the voice actress for Tamako, made a visit to Demachi Masugata Shōtengai, stopping by Hananami and leaving notes on the Kyoto Animation thanks board and in the pilgrimage exchange notebook at Sagaki:

Suzaki, other cast members and director Yamada Naoko also signed the display poster at the MOVIX Kyoto theater:

Special Items

Hosei University graduate school professor Masubuchi Toshiyuki launched a broad scope research inquiry into pop culture tourism, with particular emphasis on the subset of anime pilgrimage. Masabuchi plans to look at collaboration between anime production committees and regional/local promotion and revitalization entities. Coincidentally, Hosei was used as the visual model for the law school that Tada Banri attends in Golden Time.

@ssslocation added Episode 3 and Episode 4 cuts from Nishi-Shinjuku, Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo to his pilgrimage for selector infected WIXOSS.

@rimatai made a pilgrimage to Yokohama for Kenzen Robo Daimidarā.

@rimatai made a pilgrimage to Cosmoland in Yokohama for Seitokai Yakuindomo*.

@allora1207 made a pilgrimage to the village of Aioi in Gujō, Gifu Prefecture for Nōrin.

@paffue made a pilgrimage to Tokyo Station, Shinjuku and Shibuya for Nōrin.

@Roan_Inish made a pilgrimage to the Nihonbashi Fire Station Sumida River docks for Saki Zenkoku-hen.

@musagoso (post) and @fureshima (post) made pilgrimages to Kōriyama, Fukushima Prefecture for Mikakunin de Shinkōkei.

@rimatai made a pilgrimage to Mihama Ward, Chiba Prefecture for Nisekoi.

@rimatai made a pilgrimage to Kobe for Samurai Flamenco.

@AF10194 made a pilgrimage to Strasbourg, France for White Album 2. I can’t remember if this appeared in the anime version, or just in the manga.
