One Week Friends 一週間フレンズ。

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Episode 4

Mekakucity Actors メカクシティアクターズ

I hate to say that Mekakucity Actors is just recycling the same set of motifs from the Monogatari series but, well, it is. That’s not to say it isn’t an interesting ride. For example, the thinner line drawing and messier textures in these first few frames and late in the episode are definitely a differentiating factor. It still isn’t realism, quite far from it, but it does bring a little more of the grit of real urban textures into the otherwise flat and world.

The early part of the episode feels primarily set in Odaiba (お台場).

Though it’s the same Ferris wheel from the first episode, this time around the context feels much more like Daikanransha (大観覧車) in Odaiba, not the Mosaic Mall in Yokohama. I say “feels” because while individual frames may be clearly modeled on real things, we’re never really meant to map the settings in Mekakucity and Monogatari to one specific place.

The motif of infrastructure run amok comes back, cycling through several iterations during Hibiya’s looping dream.
