Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

@626shin made a pilgrimage to Tama, Tokyo Metropolis and Fujisawa, Kanagawa Prefecture for Episode 8.

@rimatai also made a pilgrimage to Fujisawa for Episode 8.

Episode 8

One Week Friends 一週間フレンズ。

Fujimiya and friends depart Tama (多摩), Tokyo Metropolis for a trip to the seaside.

One Week Friends 一週間フレンズ。

Interestingly, though in the show Minamidaira Station has its name changed to Midorigaoka Station, Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station (聖蹟桜ヶ丘駅) appears without an alias. Both are part of the Keiō Line (京王線).

They change to the Enoshima Electric Railway (江ノ島電鉄), commonly called Enoden (江ノ電), at Fujisawa Station (藤沢駅). Enoden serves the popular band of seaside resort towns between Fujisawa and Kamakura. It appears often in anime.

Seems that Kobaya is passing through Fujisawa as this review goes to press, so perhaps a video pilgrimage is in the works ^_^

Though the group remains on the Fujisawa mainland coast, Enoshima (江の島) is in sight.

This pedestrian promenade along the coastline runs uninterrupted between Kamakura and the bridge to Enoshima, a distance of 6 kilometers.

Add one more to the stack of exhibits for my theory that at least half of all anime beach episodes are set in Kanagawa Prefecture!

Maki, Rin and Hanayo stop for after school drinks at Ochanomizu Saint Clair (お茶の水サンクレール), a shopping center that is part of a multi-use complex adjacent to Ochanomizu Station (御茶ノ水駅). The shopping center includes this outdoor pedestrian plaza sunk below street level.

Eli and Nozomi stand at the bottom of Awajizaka (淡路坂), a slope following the brick viaduct that carries the Chūō Line (中央本線) into Ochanomizu Station from the east (pictures with Japanese captions). Not depicted clearly in the anime is that the spaces inside the larger arches at the bottom of the hill have been converted into cafes and restaurants, a terrific example of how to create unique, meaningful places through maximizing use of existing (and historic) urban design. Some people would like to see more of this kind of approach in places like Yūrakuchō (有楽町).

The clue left in Kuroneko’s PDA leads everyone to Karuizawa (軽井沢), Nagano Prefecture. This pedestrian shopping street is a main feature of the popular tourist town. Random trivia: Karuizawa is the only city in the world to have hosted events for both Summer (1964) and Winter (1998) Olympics.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

@sky_dj_ (post) and @yomikatajiyu (post) made pilgrimages to the cafe Keisuikan in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture for the OP and Episode 8.

I missed this earlier pilgrimage from @yomikatajiyu to Gifu for Episode 3.

@kbt_tigers1985 made a pilgrimage to Gifu for the OP, ED and Episode 1.

Episode 8

The Kawai Complex Guide to Manors and Hostel Behavior 僕らはみんな河合荘

Based on some previous fan activity related to the manga, the houseboy cafe seems to be a significant plot driving element. It’s based on Keisuikan (桂翠館) in Gifu City, Gifu Prefecture, but as @sky_dj_ noted in his pilgrimage (above) the degree of fidelity between the animated version and the real restaurant is not very high. The animation borrows the general interior layout, particularly the bar, as well as the design of the molding, but the wall coverings and colors are very different. The exterior facade bears almost no resemblance.

@los_endos_ transcribed a Q&A session with Tamako Love Story directors Yamada Naoko and Ogawa Taichi, and producer Senami Satori held at the Shinjuku Picadilly theater in Tokyo. Yamada was surprised by the number of attendees sporting the limited run t-shirts available only at Self Kishimoto-ya in Kyoto’s Demachi Masugata Shōtengai, the real life model for the pedestrian shopping arcade in the TV series Tamako Market and film. There was a lot of discussion on simulating camera movement with animation, such as the shallow depth of field and shake of a telephoto lens.
