In addition to hosting a large contingent of the Japanese animation industry, Musashino, Tokyo Metropolis is home to some of the best transit-oriented development and walkable neighborhoods in the country. The Kichijōji area in particular is chock full of amenities and is frequently ranked the most desirable place to live in Greater Tokyo. The girls’ day out begins by meeting at Kichijōji Station (吉祥寺駅). I was in the area about one year ago for a field study, but because parts of the station were still under renovation, the fan pilgrimages above are the first time I’m seeing the completed facade.

Kichijōji Baus Theater (吉祥寺バウスシアター) was a sought out venue for alternative/independent film, but unfortunately closed its doors at the end of 2014 May.

Taisei-ji (大盛寺) is a temple in Inokashira Park dedicated to Benzaiten (弁財天). Random aside: the kanji 盛 in Taisei is the same hanzi as my wife’s family name.

Skippu-dōri Shōtengai (すきっぷ通り商店街) doesn’t have a website or Wikipedia entry, but is active on Twitter (@skipstreet_stg) and appears in urban explorer Tamagazou’s post on Musashi-Sakai. This shōtengai begins at Musashi-Sakai Station and functions as a pathway to the office and residential neighborhoods to the north.

Special Items

@misakism made a video pilgrimage to the Demachi Masugata Shōtengai in Kyoto for Tamako Love Story. He captured the creation of the hand painted banners reading “いつもあなたのそばにある” that the arcade hung up after they appeared in the film’s background art:

@ye_bi_su added to his portfolio of pilgrimages to Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture for Tamayura using a Rollei 35S film camera, the same used by Sawatari Fū (Potte) in the show. This visit was made to attend the Shōkei-no-michi (憧憬の路 Path of Longing) candle festival, depicted in Hitotose and More Aggressive seasons. Behold the superior dynamic range of film photography.

@fragments_sue (post) and @makotomatic (post) have equally impressive digital photography from Shōkei-no-michi, which includes daytime shots of festival preparation as well as the lit displays at night. Both sets appear to be taken with a DSLR and very fast lens, and are extremely polished.

@Bf109K1 made a pilgrimage along the coastal Shōnan area and up into Yamanashi Prefecture for Yowamushi Pedal.

@sazanami made a pilgrimage to Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture for Mattsu to Yanma to Moburi-san, an animated promotional short created to promote local tourism.

@ssslocation made a pilgrimage to Shinjuku and Nakano, Tokyo for selector spread WIXOSS.

@ngwrb made a pilgrimage to Tama, Tokyo Metropolis for the film Toaru Majutsu no Indekkusu: Endyumion no Kiseki.
