Uji holds the Agata Matsuri (県祭り) each year beginning in the evening on 5 June and continuing into the wee hours of the following day. Not depicted in the episode, a central event of the festival is the ritual Bonten Togyo (梵天渡御), in which the mikoshi (portable shrine) Bonten is carried through parts of the city between shrines. The ritual is held in near darkness, as streetlamps are shutoff along the route and homes are expected to darken their lights as the procession passes. The late night festival is historically associated with fertility and nightcrawling (夜這い yobai), though as this is a Kyoto Animation work, don’t expect much in the way of funny business. (^^)

Though the lively street vendor scenes in the episode are standard fare for modern festivals in Japan, the dimly lit climb past Uji’s shrines and up the mountain are probably more evocative of the actual Agata Matsuri.

Well, I’ll be damned. The climax of the episode is a rather intense and somewhat sexually charged, yet elegant exchange between Reina and Kumiko on the dark mountain. Kyoto Animation brings us some of the spirit, if not the actual procedure of the Agata Matsuri, with a treatment that fully displays the studio’s trademark sophistication. Wonderful artwork, sequencing and voice acting. It has been a while since I put down my notebook and just watched a scene to its end.
