Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Use of fast food restaurant as third place
Tama Toshi Monorail Line (多摩都市モノレール線)
Gatchaman dips even deeper into the minefield of sensitive topics, as Yuru-ji compares the charged atmosphere created by Gelsadra’s governance to the group-think and passiveness that led to the tacit approval and participation by ordinary people in Imperial Japan’s World War II aggressions.
Ōdōri Park (大通公園) in Sapporo, Hokkaidō Prefecture
Tachikawa Station (立川駅)
In addition to eating people who resist conforming to the atmosphere, the Kuu are also fare evaders. Time for the Gatchaman to start cleaning up this hot mess.

Mantanweb reports the Uji City Tourism Center plans to distribute 50,000 copies of a map guiding visitors to locations featured in Hibike! Euphonium. @kbt_tigers1985 posted high quality scans of the map.
I recently became aware of blogger Keita (@ktism1228s), who has been publishing on a variety of topics for several years but only recently added butaitanbou to the mix. He has been covering Working!!! and popular Kyoto Animation and P.A. Works’ series over the past few months, but what’s most remarkable is his sharp camera technique and inclusion of context images beyond the frames captured to match the backgrounds in the animated works. He recently made a roundup of several series set in central Japan:
- Pilgrimage to Yuwaku Onsen in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture for Hanasaku Iroha
- Pilgrimage to Takayama, Gifu Prefecture for Hyōka
- Pilgrimage to Toyosato, Shiga Prefecture for K-On!
