Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

Final Episode 13 sends protagonist Otosaka Yuu on a barnstorming tour around the world. Japanese fans joked about the potential cost and language requirements that would arise from seichijunrei (holy land pilgrimage) for all of the locations. Prolific master of butaitanbou (scene hunting) for obscure anime settings @lidges declared Charlotte un-butaitanbou-able (Twitter). But it didn’t stop people from having a good time tracking down as many places as possible through online maps and image searching. I’ve included the results with associated screenshots below. @ts_kobaya plotted them on a Google Map, for any intrepid travelers thinking to take a shot at it:

Charlotte sends us off with an episode long highlight reel of Yuu’s trek across the globe. It’s interesting to note the wide range of place types chosen to represent different countries. We see everything from gleaming modernity to rural villages, historic landmarks to bombed ruins and failed states. Yuu’s first stop outside Japan is the Singapore Changi Airport.

The caption indicates Yuu is in a Beijing suburb, his map showing the final ability holder located in Beimafangcun, Jinzhanxiang, Chaoyang District, Beijing, China (中国北京市朝阳区金盏乡北马房村), which is beyond the fifth ring road and quite dispersed, mostly fields and retaining ponds. However, as @kujou_rin points out (Twitter), the scene appears to be modeled on much denser residential neighborhoods near the city center.
