So far, our only in-show narrative clues as to the setting for Satoru’s childhood are that it’s somewhere in Hokkaidō.

Erased 僕だけがいない街

The phenomenon of unaccompanied children using transit, walking in public places and otherwise handling their own affairs is one we see often in anime. It’s part exaggeration for narrative convenience (it’s harder to place the protagonists at the center of the conflict if their parents are hovering over), but also based on reality. What many non-Japanese don’t understand, however, is that it is less that children in Japan are more capable and independent than their peers elsewhere, but that relatively high social capital establishes trust and an expectation that any person in a public place can be called on to help a child in need. Bokumachi throws a wrench into this, with the central conflict stemming from a child abductor lurking in the shadows. I’m very interested to see how this is handled.
