Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū 昭和元禄落語心中

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Special Note: The weekly will be off next week while I’m in Japan on vacation with my daughter. From Tokyo, we plan to meet with a few butaitanbou friends in Kamakura/Fujisawa to check out the location models for Musaigen no Phantom World, then will head to Kyoto and Toyosato for K-On! and Tamako Market.

Reina’s tabehodai is modeled on the Yakiniku King, Kyoto Momoyama shop (焼肉きんぐ京都桃山店). Though the location is technically just inside the Kyoto City border, it is very close to Rokujizō, a part of Uji that was used extensively in Hibike! Euphonium. This is also quite close to the Kyoto Animation studio in Kohata. From talking with Moriwaki Kiyotaka, who works with Kyoto Animation on scenario development in and around Kyoto, I learned discoveries made during the location hunting for one anime may be cataloged and saved for use in a subsequent show.

There actually isn’t a bus stop outside Shōnan-Enoshima Station (湘南江の島駅), but the bus shelter depicted here looks similar to those used in parts of Kyoto, and which appeared a few times in K-On!

Fan Pilgrimage Update

@habusan (updated Field Guide) made a pilgrimage to Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City, Shizuoka Prefecture and Chōfu, Tokyo Metropolis for Episode 3 and Episode 4.

@lidges made a pilgrimage to Shimizu Ward for the OP, ED, and Episode 1 through Episode 3.

@touyoko_com made a pilgrimage to Shimizu Ward for the OP, ED, Episode 1 and Episode 2.

Episode 4

Haruchika - Haruta & Chika ハルチカ 〜ハルタとチカは青春する〜

Shimizu Chūō Ginza (清水中央銀座) is a a shōtengai (shopping district) in the center of the dense, coastal portion of Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City. The mountainous inland portion of the ward, which is considerably larger, is much less developed. The exterior and interior of Donut Workshop Reporo (ドーナツ工房 レポロ) is from Sengawa, Chōfu, Tokyo Metropolis and grafted into the scene.

In the scene where Haruta and others assess the apartment, the landlord mentions the inheritance tax is too onerous and he intends to sell the property for lack of tenants. In Japan, inheritance tax, property tax and building standards drive a phenomenon of abandoned properties. Private homes in Japan are generally not built to the same standards of durability as in Europe or the United States. Properties more than a few decades old either require extensive repair/renovation or are just demolished and rebuilt. Population decline, which is seen most acutely in smaller cities and regions, means more real estate sits unoccupied each year. With diminishing tenant demand, and a lack of interest or financial means to use the properties themselves, heirs, given a choice, will often leave a property to rot unclaimed.

Donut Workshop Reporo is used again in this episode as third place.

Erased 僕だけがいない街

This was the butaitanbou breakthrough episode for Bokumachi. Sleuthing led by @high__k, @teo_imperial and @animeseichi determined the street scenes and buildings all come from Tomakomai (苫小牧), Iburi Subprefecture, Hokkaidō Prefecture.

From the looks of the 2015 Street View images, there are still some restaurants along this street Inshokutengai (飲食店街) in Nishikimachi, or at least their building remnants, but the life has been more or less gutted from this shōtengai.

Based on where we start and end with this extended sequence, these street scenes likely come from Chūō-dōri as it passes through Ginza, Kyōbashi, Nihonbashi, then up through Kanda and points north. It’s a pretty substantial walk!

As they run, Kokonotsu and Hotaru describe a common preference for proximity to train stations in Japan. The candy shop is far from the station, requiring a fairly long walk, so considered not a convenient location. I’m not sure how much it reflects reality, but Hotaru claims there is an agreed upon standard used by real estate agents for calculating the walking time to the nearest station when advertising properties.
