New Game! ニューゲーム

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

2016 Summer Season Additional Notes

Amanchu! (J.C.Staff) is set in coastal Itō, Shizuoka Prefecture, on the opposite side of the peninsula from Numazu, the setting of Love Live! Sunshine!! Mangaka Amano Kozue also wrote and illustrated the Aria science fantasy series, set in Venice, the anime adaptation of which is considered one of the most popular overseas seichijunrei destinations. Planetarian: Chiisana Hoshi no Yume (David Production) is set in post-apocalyptic Hamamatsu, also in Shizuoka Prefecture. It’s apparently the summer of Shizuoka. All three of these series I’ll give more attention in first tier review each week.

Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga Aru! (Feel) may be of interest but I won’t cover week to week. Qualidea Code (A-1 Pictures) and Handa-kun (Diomedéa) don’t appear to have content suited to the focus of this review.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

Shizuoka Shimbun published an article about campaigns by the Izuhakone Railway and Tokai Bus, the two bus operators serving Numazu, to promote use of the buses for anime pilgrimage through marketing collaborations for Love Live! Sunshine!!

@touyoko_com made a pilgrimage (updated post) to Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture for Episode 2.

@keihi49 (post), @tenohira17 (post), @LyricalCygnus (post) and @sterin1130 (post) made pilgrimages to Numazu for Episode 1.

The past weekend many fans visited Numazu for a planned photo session featuring a lineup of buses and taxis featuring the anime marketing collateral:

Even the ferry to Awashima Marine Park has gotten its own wrappings:

It’s not uncommon for background art to draw from multiple real locations, but then not preserve their spatial relationships. Experienced anime pilgrims expect this and even look forward to the challenge of putting the pieces together while exploring on the ground. This bus trip takes that to an unusual extreme, with the backgrounds visible through the windows inexplicably jumping all around the supposed route, sometimes very large distances, returning to earlier points several times. @tyukyu2 documented the sequence in a map:

@touyoko_com made a pilgrimage to Itō, Shizuoka Prefecture for Episode 1. Many cuts from Episode 1 appeared in the PV, which he covered in a previous post.

Amanchu! あまんちゅ!

The background art is light in the opening episode and doesn’t include much that hadn’t already appeared in the PV, but based on the manga I anticipate we’ll be treated to many scenes from around Itō (伊東), Shizuoka Prefecture.

Visual novels by VisualArt’s/Key and the many anime adaptations of them are known for their real location backgrounds, but they aren’t all created equal. This season’s Rewrite draws from many individual places in different parts of Japan, a very common practice for visual novels, which I personally feel doesn’t lend a strong sense of coherence to the setting in an anime adaptation. By contrast, Planetarian is firmly based in one city, a post-apocalypse version of Hamamatsu (浜松), Shizuoka Prefecture.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

@fragments_sue made a pilgrimage to Ōita City, Ōita Prefecture for Episode 1.

Unfortunately, the word from those who have seen all episodes of ReLIFE, which was distributed as a batch, is that Episode 1 is about all we will get to see of Ōita. However, there is supposedly artwork based on locations in Nakano Ward, Tokyo later in the series. I’ll continue to look at one episode a week following the broadcast schedule and include subsequent content of interest as it comes up.
