Kuromukuro クロムクロ

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of transit, place and culture as rendered in anime currently broadcast in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. For a detailed outline of the approach, please refer to the explanation in the inaugural issue. Links to streaming sources are included when available, though not all may have current episode available at the time this column is published.

Kimi no Na wa.

(君の名は。)

The big story this week was the release of new feature film from Shinkai Makoto, Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name). As always, Shinkai’s immersive style and hyper-detailed background art is widely popular among the butaitanbou-seichijunrei community. The main setting consists of locations scattered around a triangle region between Shinjuku, Yotsuya and Roppongi. There film also includes scenes in Nagoya Station, Aichi Prefecture; Hida, Gifu Prefecture; and Tanegashima, Kagoshima Prefecture. Casual seichijunrei fans and serious butaitanbou practitioners were out in full force following the August 26 premiere. In addition to the material below, I expect additional content to be published over the coming weeks.

@touyoko_com (post) and @yomikatajiyu (post 1, post 2) made pilgrimages to Nagoya Station and Hida, Gifu Prefecture.

@mo_om921 has been patiently gathering information and building up a series of posts based first on the PV and other promotional material, now expanding after the film premiere.

She has created a Google Map with all of the Tokyo locations:

Kuromukuro has been all about P.A.Works (ピーエーワークス) highlighting locations around predominately rural Toyama Prefecture, where the animation studio is based. The show also displays palpable glee in destroying many of those places, this week dropping a pylon on the new studio building and headquarters in Nanto (南砺).

Repairs to the building are underway.

The studio is considering filing a claim for damages with Efidorugu.

Taken from real life: Aoba muses that it would be nice if trains ran 24/7 in Tokyo so that employees would have more flexibility on when they return home, but Hajime dryly points out that many workers in companies that set an expectation of overtime and overwork rely on the last train as a pretext for leaving the office.
