The Eccentric Family 2 有頂天家族2

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 holy land pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting), which are pop culture tourism and place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Media and General Interest

Asahi Shimbun published an article about domestic travel agencies offering anime pilgrimage itineraries.

Nishi Nippon Shimbun published an article about a Yūri!!! on ICE themed anime cafe recently opened in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture.

Sankei Shimbun published an article about the selection of Mihama, Wakayama Prefecture as the setting of Air to the Anime Tourism 88-Stop Pilgrimage organized by Kadokawa.

The Eccentric Family 2

(有頂天家族2 Uchōten Kazoku 2)

Fan Pilgrimage Update

Shimogamo Jinja appears to think you can never have too much of a good thing when it comes to tanuki, sharing more scenes of Uchōten Kazoku stuffed animals participating in daily routines at the shrine, including some pictures with miko tending to them:

The Eccentric Family 2 有頂天家族2

Update 2017/05/25: I got some helpful clarification from friends on the background of this train. Though it looks similar to the Hiroden 100 series, it’s actually the Kyoto Municipal Transportation Bureau Kōki 1 series (京都市交通局広軌1形), which makes a lot more sense in a work about Kyoto. In addition, the three level stacked train is shared between Morimi Tomihiko novels Uchōten Kazoku and Yoru wa Mijikashi Aruke yo Otome, both adapted to anime. Jurōjin/Rihaku is a recurring character in Morimi’s novels. Thanks to @high__k and @sivuchllow for the assistance.

Whenever we see a bamboo lined path with lanterns, it’s tempting to assume this is the bamboo forest in Arashiyama, Kyoto. But often in Uchōten Kazoku, we find these escapes to other dimensions may be inspired by but are not literal uses of real locations.

Are we still in Arima? If so, it appears we’re looking west, over the northern part of Kōbe. But perhaps we are somewhere else, or nowhere in particular. Not entirely clear.

The map is more relevant to the previous episode, confirming the use of Inokashira Park as one of the locations inside the painting of Hell.

As the train rises above the mountain, we do, this time, clearly see Kōbe (神戸), Hyogo Prefecture.

The bright red Venturi-shaped structure in the distance is the Kōbe Port Tower (神戸ポートタワー).
