Tsuki ga Kirei 月がきれい

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 holy land pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting), which are pop culture tourism and place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Attendees arrive by train via Jōhana Station (城端駅). The Jōhana Sakura Line (城端さくら線) is not designed to handle large event rider volume like this.

The television studio arranged for additional shuttle buses to accommodate the event.

Coupons for shōtengai businesses are distributed to participants in a trivia contest. It was the hope of the tourism board and shōtengai that the coupons would persuade event attendees to remain in or return to Manoyama at a subsequent time to use them in the shopping district. However, many people abandon the contest and discard the coupons once the concert begins.

Though the event was a mix of successes and problems, the sense that the tourism board and local merchants, including shōtengai head Oribe, finally understand each other’s interests, is a key inflection point for the series.

The final edit of the television program omits almost all of the interview with tourism board staff and b-roll of the town, instead portraying the town as moribund and focusing on the concert. It is unfortunate, but beyond their control.
