March comes in like a lion 3月のライオン

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 holy land pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting), which are pop culture tourism and place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Special Note: The weekly will be off next week while I’m traveling in Japan. I plan to do a double issue the following week as long as I don’t fall too far behind. I’ll be at both weekends of the Kyoto Animation fan event and exhibition, doing some travel and anime pilgrimage in Shikoku, and meeting up with butaitanbou community members throughout.

Media and General Interest

Yahoo News Japan published an article about the symbolic signing of a sister city relationship between Nanto and Manoyama, its fictional counterpart in Sakura Quest.

Plusbu published an article discussing the potential for regional promotion through anime as demonstrated through P.A.Works series Hanasaku Iroha and Sakura Quest.

Chūnichi Shimbun published an article about interactions between local residents and anime pilgrims in Hida, Gifu Prefecture for Kimi no Na wa.

@626shin published a photo essay of Ryūsei Matsuri. The festival in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture is notable for its handmade fireworks, which were featured in Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai.

Fans of Tsuki ga Kirei were in attendance at the 2017 Kawagoe Matsuri, including the show’s biggest fan, director Kishi Seiji:

March comes in like a lion

(3月のライオン Sangatsu no Raion)

Series Introduction

Sangatsu no Lion picks up right where it left off, even continuing the episode number sequence from the first season. Production is again handled by Shaft. Shinbō Akiyuki is again the director. Everything about the setting returns as we remember it. The nighttime backgrounds are still intoxicating.

Background Art

Tamura Seiki (田村 せいき) was the art director for the first season and returns in the same role for this second installment. He has previously served as art director for Lucky Star, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, K-On! series and film, and worked on background art for Beyond the Boundary -I’LL BE HERE- Future, Clannad, Free! – Iwatobi Swim Club, two Ghost in the Shell films, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!, Princess Mononoke, Tamako Love Story, and Whisper of the Heart. It’s no wonder we love those Sangatsu backgrounds so much.

Anime Workshop Basara (アニメ工房婆娑羅) in Nishitōkyō, Tokyo Metropolis handled backgrounds for the first season and returns for this second installment. The studio has previously worked on background art for Angel Beats!, Beyond the Boundary -I’LL BE HERE- films, Clannad, Clannad After StoryThe Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya, Free! series and High Speed! -Free! Starting Days-, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Hyōka, K-On! series and film, Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!, Nichijou, Koe no Katachi, Hibike! Euphonium, and Tamako Market and Tamako Love Story. It’s really no wonder we love those Sangatsu backgrounds so much.

Opening Credits 3

As before, most of Rei’s movements cycle between Shinkawa (新川), where he lives, and Tsukuda (佃), where the Kawamotos live, neighboring municipalities in Chūō Ward separated by the Sumida River.
