March comes in like a lion 3月のライオン

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 holy land pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting), which are pop culture tourism and place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Anime-Gataris

(アニメガタリズ)

Episode 6

Anime-Gataris アニメガタリズ

Though the name of the anime series is changed, the anime club makes a Girls und Panzer pilgrimage to Ōarai (大洗), Ibaraki Prefecture.

En route, members of the club spend several minutes hashing through a stakeholder analysis of the parties involved in this subset of pop culture tourism. They cover the motivations, common behaviors and code of conduct of pilgrims. They mention the recent trend of proactive engagement from local towns eager to take advantage of the opportunity as part of revitalization efforts. They even discuss the very new commercial category of pilgrimage facilitating smartphone apps (e.g. Butaimeguri). It is a surprisingly comprehensive and succinct summary of the current state of anime tourism. I was impressed!

Anime-Gataris アニメガタリズ

In addition to Ōarai, they mention several other popular and classic anime pilgrimage locations.
