Tsurune ツルネ ―風舞高校弓道部―

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 holy land pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting), which are pop culture tourism and place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Media and General Interest

Contents tourism researcher Okamoto Takeshi (岡本健) will publish a new book titled Seichi Business: The Era When Pop Culture Becomes a Tourism Asset [my translation] (巡礼ビジネス ポップカルチャーが観光資産になる時代) in 2018 December. Okamoto says the book will explore how anime seichi do no exist from the outset, rather they arise from the interaction of pilgrims, local residents, content creation industry and other actors.

Spice published an article by anime tourism consultant Kakizaki Shundō (柿崎俊道) about the history of anime tourism and continued fan engagement in Kuki, Saitama Prefecture for Lucky Star. Kakizaki describes the various events held throughout the year, the process of cut collection (カット回収) that is a frequent hallmark of butaitanbou and seichijunrei behavior, and the sense of loss experienced when parts of the real location setting change over time, such as the collapse of the iconic torii at Washinomiya Jinja.

There was a small but passionate butaitanbou-sha corner at Numa Love (沼ラブ), a dōjinshi fair held in Numazu, Shizuoka Prefecture on November 3. It seemed the most popular item was a (friendly) send-up of cosplay photographer and butaitanbou-sha Shin (しん @626shin), known for his extensive camera gear, (at times) flamboyant shooting style, red pants, and undying love for whatever anime character is his flavor-of-the-week. He took the ribbing in stride, enticing buyers with ink brush calligraphy of some of his more notorious tweets of admiration:

Fans of Hibike! Euphonium attended the Kitauji High School Concert Bank 3rd Periodic Concert (北宇治高校吹奏楽部 第3回定期演奏会), held November 4 at the Uji Cultural Center. The ensemble that performs these concerts is actually the Senzoku Gakuen College of Music Freshman Wind Orchestra (洗足学園音楽大学 フレッシュマン・ウインド・オーケストラ), which has recorded the original soundtracks and incidental music throughout the series, including Liz to Aoi Tori. @tsumuri_f5 (post) and @offtama (post) wrote up impressions of the performance along with photo essays from spending the day touring Uji. I enjoyed the 2nd concert when it was incorporated into the Kyoto Animation and Animation Do fan event in 2017.

@nagisaya_blog published a report (post 1, post 2) with extensive photography from this year’s Shōkei no Michi (憧憬の路)—Path of Longing—held October 27-28 in Takehara, Hiroshima Prefecture. The festival features thousands of bamboo lanterns and is depicted in depth in the Tamayura series.

The Hankyū Railway official blog published two articles exploring the relationship between Nishinomiya, Hyōgo Prefecture and the Suzumiya Haruhi series, a review of Cafe Dream and round up of the anime character tobidashi installed around the central business district.

Comic Natalie published an article about a limited availability package offered by Kinki Nippon Tourist Kantō in which participants will tour Greater New York City locations featured in Banana Fish, culminating in a special screening of the final episode.
