Iroduku: The World in Colors 色づく世界の明日から

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 holy land pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting), which are pop culture tourism and place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Media and General Interest

Polygon published an article by Linda Lombardi (@wombatarama) about butaitanbou-seichijunrei subculture. Linda’s intention was for this to be an updated and more in-depth version of her 2016 July story for the Associated Press. She gets deep into the specifics of what differentiates butaitanbou from seichijunrei, and covers the increasing commercialization of anime-induced tourism. I really enjoyed working with Linda again. As before, I provided materials and answers to her interview questions to support her research. This time, I also recruited two members of the Butaitanbou-sha Community (BTC) to provide additional perspectives.

The Guardian published an interview with Ghost in the Shell art director Ogura Hiromasa on the occasion of his backgrounds from the film featuring in Anime Architecture, an exhibition of anime background art curated by Stefan Riekeles. The exhibition began in Berlin, Germany and traveled to several locations in Europe before moving to Sydney, Australia at the time of the interview. The article describes the process of location hunting generally, and Ogura’s work with director Oshii Mamoru specifically. It includes several original photographs from Hong Kong locations and their corresponding art from the film.

Yomiuri Shimbun published an article about the third concert presented by the Kita Uji High School OB Wind Ensemble, a volunteer group comprised of Hibike! Euphonium fans, held December 23 at the Uji City Cultural Hall. The ensemble was formed in 2016 by fans who wanted to expand their seichijunrei visits to Uji into deeper engagement with the series.

@gfi59 published a new installment (post 3) in a series of reports about the reorganization of the large collection of K-On! paraphernalia donated by fans to the Toyosato Elementary School since the series original broadcast almost ten years ago. This article covers cleaning and organization of the figure displays and creating a photo database of the figures.

Nishi Nippon Shimbun published an article about the one-day-only public opening of the former Mitsubishi Joint Stock Company Karatsu Branch main building in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture on November 25, intended to give seichijunrei-sha the opportunity to explore the building, which is used as a model for the mansion where the idols live in Zombie Land Saga. It goes on to outline this history of the building and why plans to preserve the building have been delayed, allowing it to fall into disrepair.

Nishi Nippon Shimbun published an editorial about Saga Prefecture’s formal collaboration with Zombie Land Saga and use of series characters in marketing materials. The writer isn’t convinced that zombies are appropriate as tourism ambassadors, however the story includes quotes from contents tourism researcher Okamoto Takeshi, who studies both anime-induced and zombie content-induced tourism (an amazing coincidence!). Okamoto offers that zombies can be metaphors for “others”, such as foreigners, and the recent popularity of zombie-content perhaps reflects a cultural shift toward coexistence with people that have different values.

Editors Saga published a pilgrimage guide to the Saga Prefecture locations used in Zombie Land Saga. and includes details about the official tour that will be offered by Tasci Tours on February 16 and 17.

Saga Shimbun published an article summarizing Zombie Land Saga and announcing the final episode, mentioning a special exhibit of character panels at the Animate Morāju Saga branch in Saga City and the official tour.

Hokkaidō Shimbun published an article about a boost in visitors to Asahikawa, Hokkaidō Prefecture attributed to Golden Kamuy and NHK travel program Buratamori.

Nihon Keizai Shimbun published an article about temples and shrines promoting anime seichijunrei to attract younger visitors.

Business Journal published an interview with the Saitama Prefecture tourism division about its approach to promoting anime tourism.

Inbound Now published an article about promoting anime tourism to foreign visitors, with case studies for Kuki, Saitama Prefecture (Lucky Star), Ōarai, Ibaraki Prefecture (Girls und Panzer), and Karatsu, Saga Prefecture (Yūri!!! on Ice).

@flyingbird1124 made a pilgrimage to Kōenji, Suginami Ward for SSSS.Gridman. This is a different branch of Recycle Shop Zack, and while the lamps above the marquee, side alley and rear annex of the building are clearly a better match, you could also make the case that the red door frame and narrower interior of the branch in Togoshi, Shingawa Ward are incorporated into the artwork too. Location blending happens frequently in background art, though this combining of elements from different branches within the same franchise is a special subset that only comes along once in a while. Aesthetic consistency makes it tough to spot to all but very detailed observers.

@flyingbird1124 made a pilgrimage (updates: post 1, post 2, post 3) to Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture for Release the Spyce Episode 10 and Episode 11.
