Iroduku: The World in Colors 色づく世界の明日から

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 holy land pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting), which are pop culture tourism and place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Media and General Interest

Yahoo News Japan published an article by contents tourism researcher Kawashima Tarō about temples and shrines that have become seichijunrei destinations through association with anime series, as all of Japan is engaged in hatsumōde, the first visits of the new year. In most cases, these appear in the works directly, but sometimes become known simply for showing hospitality to anime pilgrims passing through on the way to locations in the vicinity. Ema with anime characters are common sights, but temples and shrines are also often hosts of pilgrimage exchange notebooks.

@offtama published a report with extensive photography from a Yurucamp Christmas camping event at the former Shimobe Elementary School in Minobu, Yamanashi Prefecture on December 23-24.

Saga TV rebroadcast the entire season of Zombie Land Saga over December 28-30, and included supplementary segments introducing locations featured in the series, presented by local idol ground Sagan Star (Hizen Risa and Hoshino Kotone). Saga Shimbun (article) covered the news of the rebroadcast, Saga Keizai Shimbun (article) covered the rebroadcast and goods sales at the television station, and Saga TV made all of the seichijunrei segments available as embedded videos on Twitter—December 28: tweet 1, tweet 2, tweet 3, tweet 4; December 29: tweet 5, tweet 6, tweet 7, tweet 8; December 30: tweet 9, tweet 10, tweet 11, tweet 12.

Walker Plus published an article introducing Zombie Land Saga locations in Saga Prefecture.

Atlas published an article about the difficulty of completing the Golden Kamuy digital stamp rally on anime pilgrimage smartphone app Butaimeguri. Some of the locations in the rally are over 300km away from each other.

Merumo published an article introducing seichijunrei common practices.

Comiket 95

I’m beginning to sound like a broken record, but butaitanbou and seichijunrei dōjinshi were again a visible force at Winter Comiket. Both the number of circles and the polish of the publications increase with each iteration.

Not confirmed yet, but from the position of the mountains and a reasonable guess that Hitomi is visiting Yuito’s grave, it seems likely this cemetery is in Motomachi (元町).
