I’m still bridging the gap between “I know how to say that” and “I can and have said that to someone else, many times”. My wife speaks to our daughter (almost 1 yr) in Mandarin, so I’m learning Chinese motherese by osmosis, but both of us are trying to suppress the knee jerk tendency to use English with each other.

I have had the pleasure of living in a third-level city in Guangdong, and although Cantonese is the preferred language, I have found a willingness of almost anyone under the age of 50 to speak with me in Mandarin.

I am also a fan of Chinese Pod and the “radio show” format works well for me. Now that I’m back in Chicago, I have chances in Chinatown and sometimes downtown or at the airport to speak. I’m also guilty of not practicing as much as I could when it comes to speaking with my Chinese wife…but I do speak with my daughter (who is only 3.5),,, however my wife says that we are developing a new dialect that is only understood by my child and myself.
