Encouragement of Climb ヤマノススメ

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 sacred site pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting)—on this website referred to collectively as anime pilgrimage—which are forms of place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

I mentioned last week the owner of the Sagaki (さが喜) fish shop in Demachi Masugata Shōtengai (出町桝形商店街), now well known among the anime pilgrimage community. In this photo from @Yamatonomiya we see why, as he stays at the shop long after shōtengai business hours to greet pilgrims arriving in Kyoto with hot tea:

@Yamatonomiya also brings us three pilgrimage posts from his recent visit: Sagaki (fish seller), pilgrim notebook and banners/signage in Masugata Shōtengai.

@toritakekan has created a very detailed map of locations in the shōtengai, including the episodes in which they appear.

@ye_bi_su posted a pilgrimage to Yura Beach. At the top of the post are links to his previous Tamako Market articles, including Masugata Shōtengai and Fujinomori Station.

@Nally45 published a collection of posts, compiled from multiple pilgrimages in February and March that cover just about everything in the show: 1, 2, 3, 4

Episode 11

Tamako Market たまこまーけっと

News that Tamako is a candidate to be the prince’s bride travels quickly. As always, the shopkeepers consider Tamako to be a child of everyone in the shōtengai and try to come to terms with what this might mean.

Tamako has something more important on her mind. She anticipates the completion of her 100th Usagiyama Shōtengai point card, something that symbolizes her emotional attachment to the shopping arcade.

Crossing over the Keihan Main Line on the walk to school, Tamako reiterates that her priorities are here, in the shōtengai.

The final few stamps

Tamako’s medal is presented at Usa-yu, the bath house. Though fanfare is minimal, the moment is meaningful to her.

The shopkeepers’ regular meeting is preempted by the uncertainty surrounding Tamako, now that the prince has contacted her.

Mamedai tries to cool his head via a quiet moment with Kunio at Stars and Clowns, the cafe.

Kunio “forgets” to warn Mamedai that he’s spiked the coffee with whiskey. Because I couldn’t resist, here’s the photo tweeted shortly after the episode aired by @Hananamiyouraku, the manager of Stars and Clowns’ model, the Hananami cafe in Masugata Shōtengai:

…and the brief conversation that ensued. How’s that for engagement?

Tamako Market たまこまーけっと

Tamako misplaces the award and scours the shōtengai in a panic, still in her pajamas.

Tamako Market たまこまーけっと

Look who just showed up, having found the medal, no less. Will Tamako choose to follow the prince to a life of luxury in an exotic tropical island nation, or stay with the humble neighborhood shopping arcade that is an inseparable part of her life and identity? Tune in next week for the exciting conclusion.
