Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 sacred site pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting)—on this website referred to collectively as anime pilgrimage—which are forms of place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Episode 3
Based on context it’s assumed that Kobayashi’s search for a larger apartment is limited to Koshigaya (越谷), Saitama Prefecture, though the buildings they visit in the search do not appear to exist, at least not at the locations depicted.
With this view from the rooftop, the building they choose would be located on the south side of the river, east of Koshigaya Station.
Shirakobato Bridge ( しらこばと橋)
At the end of a long day and running on muscle memory, Kobayashi unintentionally walks to her previous apartment to the west of the station.
Communication is emerging as a recurring theme. When people (and dragons) from different backgrounds and at different stages of life share walls, commons and public spaces, talking through conflicts and uncovering congruent interests is essential for resolving problems.
Higashi-Nihonbashi (東日本橋), Chūō Ward, Tokyo Metropolis.
