Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid S 小林さんちのメイドラゴンS

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 sacred site pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting)—on this website referred to collectively as anime pilgrimage—which are forms of place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

@york21c made a pilgrimage (post 1) to Koshigaya, Saitama Prefecture for Episode 6.

@koyoikaze made a pilgrimage to Nihonbashi-Ningyōchō and Nihonbashi-Hamachō, Chūō Ward, Tokyo Metropolis for Episode 1 and Episode 2.

Episode 6

Shōta approaches the intersection at the north end of the Shirakobato Bridge, where he meets Tōru, in Koshigaya (越谷市), Saitama Prefecture. Except where noted otherwise, the rest of the Maid Dragon locations in Episode 6 are in Koshigaya.

The river meeting point referred to is where the Motoara River and Naka River (中川) meet, at the border of Koshigaya and Yoshikawa (吉川市).

Although the apartment doesn’t exist, context puts it on the north edge of the Motoara River, within sight of the Shirakobato Bridge on the east side. This means that, if we’re taking a literal interpretation of spatial relationships in the fictional work (a big leap), for Kanna to meet up with Saikawa in the following cut she would have to travel a considerable distance, around 3-4 kilometers depending on the path.

From this meeting point, they begin walking east along the river, back in the direction from which Kanna theoretically came.

Though it is broken up here and there by short stretches that require using sidewalks and occasionally crossing a street, there really are pedestrian paths and green spaces along the entire section of the river included in this walk, about 7 kilometers. The paths and park areas extend beyond this, as well.

Yoshikawa Bridge (吉川橋) is in the background. What’s interesting is that the art has captured it during a transition period, roughly 2018-2019, when support columns were being constructed for a new bridge parallel to the old one, which is now complete. [Credit: @ssslocation, Twitter]

Undetermined. As with Gama Gama and Kamee, the ice cream shop may be a fictional structure. Whether it exists or not, it will be interesting to see if the road in front and coastline behind suggest a real location.

As a third place, Kamee can be many things. Satsuki owns the business, but she also seems to be her own best customer, and uses this place to foster relationships with community members.

So far, we’ve been saying this small shrine is modeled on Iri nu kami nu yā (西ノ神之屋 イリヌカミヌヤー), found at Cape Zanpa (残波岬) in Yomitan (読谷村), Okinawa Prefecture. This is because it was a comparatively well known example that came up prominently in web searches. But it’s difficult to think that there aren’t more examples of similar shrines, kind of like the stone Jizo statues found everywhere in mainland Japan. Like Gama Gama, Kamee, and potentially the ice cream shop, it could also be a fictional structure. Going forward, I won’t link the shrine to a specific location anymore, but Zanpa is still a good place to go if you want a good photo of an interesting one.
