My Dress-Up Darling その着せ替え人形は恋をする

Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 sacred site pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting)—on this website referred to collectively as anime pilgrimage—which are forms of place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Media and General Interest

Kyoani Shop physical store closing
To accommodate increasing staff numbers, Kyoto Animation will repurpose what had been the Kyoani & Do Shop (京アニ&Doショップ!) on the first floor of the studio’s Kohata Building in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture as workspace for anime production. The online shop will remain in business. @ultimatemegax wrote up a brief history of the physical store. Media coverage: J-Cast News, ITmedia, Anime News Network, Crunchyroll News

Comment: This is bittersweet. It’s the best possible reason for closing the physical store, but I’ll still miss stopping by when I visit Uji. In addition to the company head office and Studio 2 (which also appear in Lucky Star), there are locations from Chūnibyō demo Koi ga Shitai!, Kyōkai no Kanata, and Hibike! Euphonium nearby.

Sado Aiuta screening
Cinemas Plus published an article that includes an introduction to locations in Sado, Niigata Prefecture used in Ai no Utagoe o Kikasete, and interview with the owner and operator of Gashima Cinema (ガシマシネマ), where the film is currently screening. Gashima is a cafe and mini-theater, and the only cinema in Sado. The background behind this screening was covered previously. Media coverage: Cinemas Plus

Minobu Yuru Camp event
Gojōgaoka Activation Promotion Council (五条ヶ丘活性化推進協議会) will host an overnight camping meetup for Yuru Camp fans at former Shimobe elementary and junior high schools in Minobu, Yamanashi Prefecture on April 2 and 3. Interested participants can register here until March 30. This will be the annual Ohanami × Schoolyard Camp (お花見×校庭キャンプ). In addition to the cherry trees at the school yard, participants can view the blossoms at Jyōkōin, Kai-Tokiwa Station, and elsewhere in Minobu.

Karatsu Zonsaga building preservation
Karatsu, Saga Prefecture had previously decided to preserve in place the former Mitsubishi Joint Stock Company Karatsu Branch main building (旧三菱合資会社唐津支店本館), now used as the Karatsu City Museum of History and Folklore, but which has been closed since 2003 due to deterioration. Karatsu City and its Board of Education announced that over 13 million yen will be allocated to next year’s budget to assess the reinforcement measures needed and evaluate potential exhibition materials for when it becomes operational as a tourism facility. Preservation work is planned to start in 2025 and expected to take four years. The building is considered a seichi by Zombie Land Saga fans, which was one of the factors that led the city to seek repairs in place. Media coverage: NHK

Uji Eupho collaboration
