Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 sacred site pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting)—on this website referred to collectively as anime pilgrimage—which are forms of place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Animonozukuri Award (アニものづくりアワード) recognizes anime, manga and character content collaborations and promotional tie-ins with other industries, and has been held since 2017, though the 2020 awards were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This year’s awards cover the period 2020 January 1 to 2022 June 30. On 2022 September 17, the award will for the second consecutive year be presented as part of the Kyoto International Manga Anime Fair (京都国際マンガ・アニメフェア), also known as Kyomafu (京まふ). The regional revitalization category (地方創生部門), which was new for 2021, is again included. The regional revitalization category targets initiatives that use anime, manga or characters to promote local industry and tourism, including public relations activities, tourism marketing, collaborations between traditional crafts and media contents intellectual property, business related to seichijunrei, and events.
This year, the event will for the first time include a panel exhibition of 25 of the works nominated for the regional revitalization category, and a joint event with Kyomafu called Business Seminar & Tour (ビジネスセミナー＆ツアー). The panel exhibition will be held from September 17 to 23 at the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design on the B1 level of Miyako Messe Exhibition Center in Kyoto, the same venue as Kyomafu. The Business Seminar & Tour will be held September 17, the day of the award presentation, beginning with the seminar in the museum special exhibition room, then moving to a business-oriented tour of the Kyomafu venue. Attendance is free, capped at 50 participants, first-come, first-served. Interested individuals can register online.
In the seminar, entertainment sociologist Nakayama Atsuo (中山淳雄) will give a keynote address on the theme “Kyomafu aims to go global with oshi and seichijunrei in the next ten years” (京まふ、『推しと聖地巡礼』でグローバルを目指す次の10年)—oshi (推し) means to be a fan or supporter of something or someone, often a specific character or performer, but also implies an aspect of promotion or advocacy. This will be followed by a talk session with Rikukawa Kazuo (陸川和男), president and CEO of Character Data Bank.
