Welcome to this week’s review of notable instances of public transit use and urban design, as well as discussion of place identity and culture, through anime currently broadcast or screening in Japan and simulcast internationally via the web. This review also documents seichijunrei (聖地巡礼 sacred site pilgrimage) and butaitanbou (舞台探訪 scene hunting)—on this website referred to collectively as anime pilgrimage—which are forms of place-based engagement induced by the use of real locations in show settings.

Media and General Interest

Ōarai Ankō Matsuri
Ōarai Ankō Matsuri (大洗あんこう祭) and Shōkō Kanshasai (商工感謝祭), following cancellations in 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19, were held for the first time in three years in Ōarai, Ibaraki Prefecture on November 19 and 20. Iwaki Anime Bunkasai
Iwaki Anime Bunkasai (いわきアニメ文化祭) will be held November 22 and 23 in Iwaki, Fukushima Prefecture. This year’s event includes a talk event with studio Gaina president and director Asao Yoshinori (浅尾芳宣). Asao is a Fukushima Prefecture native and led the productions of broadcast series Hulaing Babies and web anime Masamune Date ni Kuru, both of which were created with the intention to induce tourism to the region.

Yuwaku Bonbori Matsuri

Shiroishi anime tourism lecture
Professor Ōtani Naoyuki (大谷尚之) from the Miyagi Gakuin Women’s University Faculty of Modern Business (宮城学院女子大学現代ビジネス学部) gave a public lecture on anime tourism and regional revitalization at an event organized by the Shiroishi Chamber of Commerce (白石商工会議所) in Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture on November 10.

CATS Jashin-chan seminar
Hokkaido University Center For Advanced Tourism Studies (北海道大学観光学高等研究センター), or CATS, will hold an online seminar on anime and tourism creation on November 25. The seminar will be moderated by professor and CATS head Yamamura Takayoshi (山村高淑), feature Jashin-chan Dropkick advertising producer Yanase Kazuki (栁瀬一樹), and explore the theme of whether local governments can proactively create contents tourism destinations or seichi, versus the norm of utilizing successful works after a location has been chosen for filming or modeled as an anime setting. The seminar is free and open to the public, however due to unexpected demand the original capacity of 100 was increased to 500, and as of the time of writing this is also full.

Washinomiya Tsukasa statue
Tsukasa Project (つかさ☆プロジェク) is a crowdfunding campaign planning multiple projects related to Lucky Star in Washinomiya, Saitama Prefecture. In its first fundraising round, launched in July, it raised money for creating a kigurumi for Tsukasa Hīragi, which will join the one for her twin sister Kagami, which has been in service for several years. For its just announced second round, the project is planning to create and install a statue of Tsukasa in Washinomiya. A prototype is under construction, a photo of which will appear in the recently resumed Lucky Star manga.

Saga Zonsaga manhole covers
Installation of the third and final phase of manhole covers featuring Zombie Land Saga characters in Saga Prefecture is now complete. At the end of the second phase in May, 21 manhole covers with original designs were installed in 13 cities. The final phase took place in a sequential rollout beginning in November, installing nine more covers in eight cities and towns, including the remaining seven towns of Tara, Kiyama, Ōmachi, Kamimine, Genkai, Miyaki and Kōhoku, as well as one additional cover in Karatsu. The project includes a total of 30 unique covers and all 20 cities and towns in the prefecture. Media coverage: Saga TV

Nanjō Aquatope promotion
The Shiroi Suna no Aquatope free entry art exhibition and sales of goods featuring original illustrations at Nanjō City Local Products Center (南城市地域物産館) in Okinawa Prefecture, two parts of the marketing promotion covered previously, are now underway. Dōgashima Yuru Camp promotion
Dōgashima New Ginsui (堂ヶ島ニュー銀水), a hotel in Nishiizu, Shizuoka Prefecture, is extending the offering period for its Yuru Camp promotional package to 2023 April 30. The hotel is close to Sanshirōjima and the Dōgashima tonbolo, which appear in Season 2 Episode 12. The package includes Ike nihonshu, rooms decorated with character visuals and stocked with the Yuru Camp manga, and a clearfile featuring scenes from the Izu Peninsula in the series.

Fan Pilgrimage Update

@teo_imperial made a pilgrimage to Takaosan in Hachiōji, Tokyo Metropolis for Yama no Susume Next Summit Episode 7.

@fureshima2223 made a pilgrimage in 2015 Hiwadasan in Hidaka, Saitama Prefecture based on the Yama no Susume manga.

@shinagaki made pilgrimages in 2017 to Hiwadasan and Takaosan based on the Yama no Susume manga.

@anime_activity (tweet) in September and @fragments9029 (tweet) the day before the broadcast made pilgrimages to Hiwadasan. To get in the proper headspace for maximum enjoyment of yama girl time, sometimes you just have to go climb a mountain.

Mountain guide and Hannō resident Washio Daisuke (鷲尾太輔), writing for Yamap Magazine, published a review of Yama no Susume Next Summit Episode 7, including comparison images and detailed information about Hiwadasan and Takaosan.
